Scott Redmond replaces Tariq Simons in Island Games tennis team
Scott Redmond has been called up to Bermuda’s team for the Island Games in Guernsey after the island’s No. 1 Tariq Simmons pulled out as a results of issues with his travel documents.
It is the second time that Simmons has been unable to represent the island after missing out on last month’s Davis Cup Americas group three in Paraguay, where the team managed to avoid relegation.
“I am not going to the Island Games as I had some issues getting my passport,’’ said Simons.
“I will be missing opportunities to compete and its pretty disappointing, I misplaced my Bermuda passport and I engaged someone to get it done, but they didn't get it done on time.”
The 22-year old Simons, who has never played in the Island Games, has missed out on the opportunity to represent the island this year as there are no team competitions left in the schedule, but he is looking to be back representing Bermuda in the Davis Cup in 2024.
Redmond, a member of Bermuda’s team in the 2019 Island Games in Gibraltar, comes in as the fifth seed and will play singles.
The experienced Gavin Manders is now the highest-ranked player followed by James Finnigan, Christopher Weeks and David Thomas. Manders, who has won 11 medals at the Island Games, is the team captain and has already indicated that his target is a podium finish in both singles and doubles.
Shelby Madeiros and Victoria Stephens make up the female squad for the event in Guernsey.
The men’s competition will follow the Davis Cup format, while the women’s tournament will be based on the Billie Jean Cup, with the teams set to play singles, doubles and mixed doubles.
