Bernard Wade wins second medal at Island Games

Bernard Wade has won his second medal in archery at the Island Games in Guernsey

Bernard Wade has picked up his second archery medal when winning bronze at the Island Games in Guernsey on Wednesday.

Wade, winner of the silver medal in the 1440 men’s recurve on Monday, fought off Jason Le Page, of Guernsey, 6-5 in the head-to-head knockout to secure a medal before his quest for gold was ended when he lost 6-0 to William Chater, of Falkland Islands, in the semi-finals.

Wade’s podium appearance was Bermuda’s third at the Island Games after the men’s tennis team won bronze.

Elsewhere in Guernsey, Ebonie Cox shot to the lead in the women’s individual golf following up her first round of 73 with a 79. Tracy Burgess is fifteenth, Kimberly Botelho seventeenth with Ann Symonds is down in 37th position.

Oliver Betschart and Adam Perry are joint eighteenth in the men’s tournament after round two, with Jarryd Dillas and Jevon Roberts tied on twentieth position.

Nicole Stovell has moved up to bronze-medal position in the sailing ILCA 6 regatta with just one race to come on Thursday. Stovell finished third and eighth in her two races on Wednesday. Ahzai Smith sits ninth on 60 points.

Shelby Madeiros remains in contention for a medal in the women’s singles tennis after she booked her spot in the semi-finals.

Seventh-seed Madeiros defeated Ffion Fletcher, of the Cayman Islands, 6-3, 7-5 in the quarter-finals and will third-seed Natasha Forrest, of Jersey, in the semi-finals.

There was also progress for the men’s doubles pair of Gavin Manders and James Finnigan, who are through to the last four. They overcame the Gotland duo of Felix Devallius and Filip Devallius 6-3, 7-5. Waiting for the Bermudians in the semi-finals are Zacharias Forsström and Nathan Schulz, of Aland.

Finnigan was knocked out of the singles at the quarter-final stage by Stuart Parker, of Jersey, who won 6-1, 6-1.

Also eliminated were the pair of David Thomas and Christopher Weeks, who lost 7-6, 7-5 to the Menorca duo of Alexander Xavier Mesquida Berg and Oscar Richard Mesquida Berg in the men’s doubles last eight.

In indoor bowls open singles, David Leach tops Group A after winning all four of his matches.
