Bermuda upset Jamaica at Senior Caribbean Squash Championships
Bermuda posted a massive upset over Jamaica in the team event at the Senior Caribbean Squash Championships on Thursday.
The 3-2 win over the Jamaicans in the Cayman Island’s means Bermuda have booked a spot in the semi-finals of the competition against Guyana on Friday.
In a series of tight matches, Micah Franklin triumphed 10-12, 11-6, 11-2, 10-12, 11-5 against Julian Morrison, Taylor Carrick defeated Tahjia Lumley 9-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-8, 11-7 and Anaya Smith won 13-11, 11-13, 11-3, 12-10 over Bruce Burrowes.
Anthony Fellowes and Armin de Weerd were beaten in straight sets by Dane Schwier and Stephan Morrison respectively.
Bermuda’s chances of making the semi-finals had looked slim after they they lost 3-2 to Barbados in their opening match on Wednesday, but Franklin, head of squash at the Bermuda Squash Racquets Association, was pleased with the team’s courageous display against Jamaica.
“Team Bermuda pulled off a great upset beating Team Jamaica in a narrow 3-2 encounter,’’ Franklin said.
“Jamaica were seeded third for the event, whereas Bermuda were seeded fifth. I’m very proud of the team performance and the boys left everything out there. You could tell that this one meant a lot to us.”
Peter Drury and James Dodgson form Bermuda’s veteran team and they have been performing well despite losses against Jamaica, Cayman Islands, and Barbados. They play Guyana and Trinidad next.
