Winter tennis league set to get under way
The Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association Winter League gets under way on an action-packed opening round of fixtures today.
Matches will be hosted across three separate venues including the WER Joell Stadium, Reefs Club and Pomander Gate Club.
Temple of Tennis are the defending champions for the men and the women’s league, with the men starting the campaign away to Pomander Gate B Pirates while the women clash with Lambert Island Tennis at WER Joell Stadium.
In other matches, LIT take on Pomander Gate A in the men’s league, while Pomander Gate women square off with Double C at Reef Tennis Club.
Hugh Seymour, the Temple of Tennis men’s captain, predicted an exciting fixture against Pomander Gate.
“It should be an exciting opening fixture,” he said.
“Pomander Gate is one of our rivals, they've been close competition throughout the years so we look forward to battling it out with them.
“The women will be looking to continue with their unbeaten run from last season.”
Kyle Williams and Nicholas Butterfield make up the pairing for the men’s defending champions.
The women’s team, captained by Shonette Wilson will be counting on the exploits of Nadhira Durham, the island’s No 1 seed in the 16 years and under singles, and Airez Gilbert-Simons.
Michael Wolfe, the president of the BLTA, also revealed at the conclusion of the league campaign there will be a separate competition held.
“At the end of the league, we will also be staging be a one-day pairs competition which will determine the best male and female doubles team,” he added.
