Bermuda beat Panama 2-0 to seal a seventh-placed finish at the ITF North, Central American and Caribbean Junior Davis Cup regional prequalifying main draw in the Dominican Republic.

Having lost the fifth place play-off 2-1 to Costa Rica, Terry Smith’s side bounced back in style against Panama.

Tobiah Goodchild won the first singles 4-0, 4-0 against Andre Martiz, Panama’s No 1 seed. Zachary McGuire followed that up with a gutsy display, coming back from 3-0 down in the second set to seal a 4-2, 5-3, victory.

Smith was full of praise for the island’s young players, which also included Tristan Pettit, for remaining focused throughout the tournament.

“I'm pleased with the team’s disciplined composure throughout the week,’’ Smith said.

“I'm convinced that the experience has definitely further opened their eyes to the world of Tennis outside of Bermuda in our region.

“Bermuda should be proud that the sport of tennis still has a place that needs to be respected and supported wholeheartedly.”
