Zach McGuire stars in junior Spring Fling Tournament
Zachary McGuire won two titles at the AXA XL Junior Spring Fling Tennis Tournament, which concluded at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium on Wednesday night.
McGuire, 15, won the under-16 and under-18 titles, winning all his eight sets in the older age division, which featured five players in a round-robin tournament. In the under-16 final, he defeated Junior Davis Cup team-mate Tobiah Goodchild.
McGuire, who turns 16 next month, was pleased with his performances.
“It feels really nice to win both the under-16 and the under-18,’’ McGuire said.
“I was more happy with my results in the under-18 because I got to play against more competition.
“We had a round-robin for that age group and I got to play everybody. I was able to beat Sebastian Pukk and he is someone I’ve struggled to beat in the past.
McGuire, who turns 16 next month, is now preparing for life in the under-18 category.
Chloe McBrearty was crowned champion of the girls under-12 competition, while Manuel Maldonado took the honours for the boys in the same age group. Jaden Jones clinched the boys under-14 tournament with Nadhira Durham successful in the girls under-18.
Durham, 16, a member of Bermuda’s Billie Jean King Cup, enjoyed playing against sole opponen Kumani Jackson, winning both matches.
,“It feels nice to be the champion and I’m really proud of myself,’’ Durham said.
“The competition was good and Kumani had some really nice serves. I felt like I could have played a little better, I could have moved my feet more and I could have been more prepared.
“It’s unfortunate it was only the two of us because we could have had more competition. We could also get more experience playing against girls our age.”
