Bermuda boosted their chances of survival in the Davis Cup Americas group three by defeating Guatemala 2-1 at Club Internactional de Tenis, Asuncion, Paraguay on Wednesday.

Trey Mallory gave Bermuda a bright start with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Kaeri Hernandez Mariona before Daniel Phillips followed up by defeating Sebastian Dominguez, 6-2, 6-2.

Bermuda were unable to complete a clean sweep as Tariq Simons and Jack Keyes were beaten 6-3, 6-1 by Gabriel Porras and Kent Tagashira.

Ricky Mallory, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association national tennis director, highlighted the significance of the win over Guatemala.

“In order for us to have any hopes in securing a spot in the Americas group three next year, we knew Guatemala was a must-win situation,’’ Mallory said.

“Sometimes having that in the back of your mind going into a fixture brings added pressure to players.

“I’m proud of how Trey and Daniel were able to overcome that pressure and secure the fixture by winning their singles matches.

“Credit should also be given to Tariq and Jack for their valiant effort in the doubles. The team camaraderie for Bermuda is beautiful to see, each player encouraging and pushing the next.

“That’s something that a lot of the other nations competing do not possess. We have a tough match against Jamaica on Thursday, but our boys will definitely be ready for the battle.”
