‘Intense competition’ takes toll on Bermuda
Bermuda suffered their third 3-0 defeat at the Billie Jean King Cup Americas group three in Tacarigua, Trinidad & Tobago, with the latest loss coming against El Salvador yesterday.
Neal Towlson’s side went into the tie looking to redeem themselves after coming out second-best against St Lucia on Wednesday. It was not to be, as the script played out the same way as it did when they squared off against Costa Rica and St Lucia.
Shelby Madeiros, the No 2 seed, lost 6-0, 6-3 to Michelle Irigoyen. Nadhira Durham was next to take to the court and things did not go her way, Bermuda’s No 1 going down 6-1, 6-0 to Valentina Cruz.
For the doubles, Towlson unleashed Durham and Zoë Fisher, with the two outgunned 6-3, 6-3 by Daniela Aguilar and Irigoyen.
Bermuda wait for the conclusion of the round-robin fixtures today before they head into the play-offs 24 hours later.
Towlson welcomed the break in play, as he believes his charges are feeling the effects of playing on a daily basis.
“The back-to-back days of intense competition have begun to take their toll on the players, and signs of physical strain were shown in today’s performances,’’ Towlson said.
“Despite this setback, the team remains focused and optimistic as we prepare for our next match on Saturday, which will be determined based on Friday’s outcomes.
“With a day off from competition on Friday, we plan to use the time wisely, focusing on practice and recovery to regain our edge and ensure they are ready for the crucial upcoming matches.
“The girls have been fantastic all tournament long, showing resilience and fighting spirit. We’re confident that with some rest and focused practice, we can come back strong on Saturday.
“Our players have already shown that they can compete at this level, and they remain committed to representing their country with pride.’’
