Zach McGuire shines in Back to School tournament
Zachary McGuire displayed why he is one of Bermuda’s most promising junior tennis players when he won two titles in the Back to School tournament, which finally concluded at Port Royal Tennis Courts on Sunday.
McGuire took the top honours in the under-16 division with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph over Tobiah Goodchild in the final. Will Britten was third, Cyre Trott finished fourth and fifth position went to Hasan Khan.
The 16-year-old McGuire also came out tops in the under-18 competition, in which he won two of his matches against Goodchild and Jadon Spriggs in a round-robin. Only three participants remained in this age group following the withdrawal of Sebastian Pukk.
In the girls under-14 age group, Chloe McBrearty took the top position ahead of Lee Terceira and Arianna Parra Delgado. Dylan Outerbridge finished fourth.
Hasan Khan claimed the boys under-14 title, with second spot taken by Manuel Maldonado. Michael Mohipp came out third and Julian Hands finished fourth.
Terceira was the top girl in the under-12 category, in which McBrearty took second spot. Third went to Parra Delgado, with Ella Metschnabel securing fourth.
Maldonado picked up the boys under-12 crown, with Trystan Thompson the runner-up and Riley Maybury third.
The tournament, which started on September 12, only concluded on Sunday due to bad weather, with the Temple of Tennis courts in an unsuitable state for the action to proceed.
Michael Wolfe, the Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president, extended his appreciation to AXA XL insurance company for their continued support of tennis development on the island.
“The BLTA would like to thank our sponsors AXA XL for supporting this event,’’ Wolfe said.
“We would also like to thank Temple of Tennis for making this event possible by availing their facilities.”
