Junior Spring Fling tournament comes to exciting conclusion
The Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association’s Junior Spring Fling tennis tournament came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday.
Finals took place at WER Joell Stadium throughout the day as age-group champions were crowned after four days of action on court.
Familiar rivals and the top two seeds, Zachary McGuire and Sebastian Pukk, squared off in the final of the boys under-18 competition, with 16-year-old Maguire successfully defending his crown by prevailing 6-3, 6-2.
Manuel Maldonado dominated the younger age groups, becoming champion in the boys under-12 and under-14 divisions. Maldonado played twice on the final day of competition, defeating Trystan Thompson 6-4, 6-1 in the final of the under-14 tournament before beating the same opponent 6-1, 6-1 in the last game of the under-12 event.
Tobiah Goodchild came out on top in the boys under-16 division, with his match on Sunday morning against Jadon Spriggs one of the highlights of the tournament. Both youngsters produced a staggering array of shots with Goodchild eventually coming through in the third-set tie-break to win 4-6, 7-5, 10-2.
Chloe McBrearty and Lee Terceira were the star attractions in the girls competitions and both came away with one title apiece.
Terceira won the girls under-12 competition, beating McBrearty 6-4, 6-1 in the final on Sunday but that form was reversed in the under-14 competition with McBrearty beating her rival 6-2, 6-2 on the way to victory.
