Hawkins Island resort plans given an extension

An exclusive resort proposed for Hawkins Island has been granted an extension on its Planning approval until November, 2012.Plans for the holiday retreat, first reported by The Royal Gazette on February 5, were modified after Planning relaxed zoning restrictions.William Cox, whose family trust owns the Hamilton Harbour island, said the extension was “a continuation of the normal planning process for the development”.He added: “We look forward to bringing an exciting product to the Island in years to come.”In-principle approval from the Planning Department means that developers are given a window of two years in which to proceed with their plans.According to Colin Campbell, head of the Bermuda division of OBM International architects, the site is now approved for “sensible development”, to preserve the Island’s woodlands. He called the proposed resort “a quiet retreat where guests can enjoy the privacy of the island and have the requisite amenities”.The exclusive accommodation will be based around an existing guard tower, which the Planning application says will be modified into a “main lodge house with reception area, library, bar and lounge, restaurant and observation deck”.A swimming pool will be equipped with a swim-up bar. Plans for tennis courts have been dropped.Accommodation will consist of four private suites and eight private villas, with four beach front bungalows for spa treatments and “multimedia cabanas”.
