Tollywood film shooting in Bermuda pushed back to March

A movie still from 'Veera' which is due to have some location shooting in Bermuda.

An Indian film expected to start shooting this month has been pushed back until March. The Tollywood film, ‘Veera', has already started shooting in India. The Tollywood film industry produces more films than Bollywood every year in India. The producers of the film visited Bermuda last spring with Government consultant Ven Subramanian to scout locations for a dance sequence. It was supposed to be shot in September; however, a scheduling conflict with the movie's star, Ravi Teja, forced them to reschedule to January this year. When asked if the movie was still planning to film in Bermuda Mr Subramanian said the Government would provide any comments.A Department of Tourism spokeswoman said: “We are very appreciative of the considerable amount of time, effort and creativity which has gone into this project. We have been advised that the production is progressing wonderfully and we look forward to welcoming the film crew in March, as they will be on Island to film specific aspects of the movie.“Ultimately we look forward to viewing the finished product, which will undoubtedly be a great medium that will showcase Bermuda to a broader international audience.”The Royal Gazette asked how many Indian films planned to shoot in Bermuda this year. This paper also asked how much, if anything, Mr Subramanian has been paid as a consultant and if his contract would be extended. The Government did not respond to these queries. In May last year former Premier Ewart Brown said Mr Subramanian was working without financial consultation but he anticipated a formal working relationship in the future. The concept of filming Indian movies in Bermuda came about after Dr Brown visited the country in March 2010.While there he visited Whistling Woods Institute Asia's largest film, television, animation and media arts organisation.Mr Subramanian coordinated the trip to India and is the Government's liaison with the directors and producers of Veera.Upon his return Dr Brown defended the $37,000 trip saying it would bring many benefits to the Island such as civil service training and exposure from Indian films. He told the House of Assembly: “This will expose Bermuda to audiences not only in India but in the United States, Canada and the UK.“This is a major achievement which will provide a short-term boost to tourism and related services while the crew and stars are in Bermuda, and will be followed by significant exposure into new and emerging markets from which we can only benefit.”‘Veera' is the only Indian film to be publicly linked to Bermuda so far, although another producer visited the Island in August last year. The director of Veera told an Indian website this week that the film was a big budget production.“‘Veera' is going to be a mass-oriented film with all commercial elements,” he told 16 Reels. “Ravi Teja is playing the character, which will have two variations. The film will have eight action sequences, which will be highlight to it. It has seven songs in which six songs recording has been completed.”‘Veera' is going to be highest budget film in Ravi Teja's career and we planning to release it in May.”

What is Tollywood?

Tollywood produces films in the Telugu language. It is based in the Andhra Pradesh state in India. Tollywood is well known for breaking records in the Guinness Book of World Records and producing more films than any other region in India.

In 2009 it shot 207 films, last year 162 were shot.

In 2010 the industry made $153 million according to MSNBC India. This accounts for approximately once percent of the region's GDP.

Last year was a bad year for Tollywood as politicians in the region considered creating an independent state of Telangana, separate from Andhra Pradesh

MSNBC India reported: “The industry is yet to emerge from the slowdown and there is a dearth of both great storylines and big budgets.

“Insiders say the Telangana factor impacted business severely and there's been a 35 percent drop in collections. Historically, the film industry in Andhra Pradesh is rooted in the political world.”

In 2005 the industry made $500 million.

Bermuda is not the first exotic location for a Tollywood film. They have already featured Mauritius, Iceland and the Bahamas.

One filmmaker's vistas of Switzerland were so popular tours from India to the European country have been organized.
