Petition created calls for SDO reversal

An online petition has been created, calling for an SDO for the Rosewood Tucker’s Point Resort to be abandoned. The petition, which appeared online yesterday, asks the Ministry of the Environment, Planning and Infrastructure Strategy to reverse the decision to allow the SDO.The preamble to the petition reads: “The Bermuda Government is seeking to have a Special Development Order (SDO) approved to permit the Tucker’s Point Hotel to expand its current hotel and build additional residences. This is some of the most ecologically sensitive land in Bermuda as there are lands with Nature Conserve, Woodland Reserve and Coastal Conserve designations.“It is also a culturally sensitive plot of land as it had once been home to a large number of Black Bermudians and had been taken from them forcibly.”As of press time, the petition has only a handful of signatures, but organisations including the Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce, the National Trust and anti-racism group CURB (Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda) have spoken out against the SDO. However, Environmental Minister Walter Roban has said stringent conditions have been put in place to protect the environment on the property.Rosewood Tucker’s Point has received an SDO for planning in principle, but in order to get begin construction, the proposal must be given final approval by the Department of Planning.Useful websites: www.gopetition.com/petition/43111.html
