Government is listening to people’s concerns and wants to return the Island to “its pinnacle place in the global tourism market”.This is the message from Tourism Minister Patrice Minors who is calling on those in the tourism trade to work together to “readjust the way that they position their tourism product”.Ms Minors believes change is needed to encourage travellers to choose to come to Bermuda instead of rival destinations, saying competition is tougher than ever. Her aims are an “aggressive marketing of Bermuda” in targeted gateway cities in the US and Canada and a closer partnership between hoteliers and Government.Ms Minors said: “While in recent months, weeks and days, there has been considerable discussion coming from certain sectors of the community about the current state of tourism in Bermuda, I want to assure the people of Bermuda that this Government is listening.“However it must be understood that in order to compete and cope in this current climate governments and tourism authorities around the world have had to readjust the way that they position their tourism product. Bermuda is no different.”Ms Minors spoke out about the state of the tourism industry at the official re-naming of the Rosewood Tucker’s Point Resort last week. She said the resort was “a shining example” of what the Island needed and said she hoped its reputation “will reverberate globally”.But, she said: “Competition has become ever more sophisticated and focused, as travel destinations vie with one another for limited tourism dollars to attract and maintain a traveller who is now even more discerning on where they choose to spend their leisure time.“Together, we will collectively put our shoulders to the wheel and take the necessary steps to ensure that we return Bermuda to its pinnacle place in the global tourism market.”Ms Minors added that there were “ambitious plans on the agenda” with the creation and implementation of the national tourism plan.
