Bermuda-themed Heritage Nights kick off in Dockyard tonight
A Heritage Nights programme designed to liven up Dockyard on Thursday nights is kicking off tonight.The event will run for 18 weeks and will feature live music, ethnic dance performances, juggling acts and craft demonstrations, Environment Minister Walter Roban told a press conference yesterday.The Victualling Yard will have county fair-style entertainment, while a pub garden with a crown and anchor table and local food and drink and rum tasting will be set up outside the Frog and Onion.Mr Roban said visitors and residents can also look forward to a craft market, games area for children, entertainment stage and food and beverage area.“The primary focus is to display Bermuda’s rich cultural activities and pastimes, as well as Bermudian games, foods and drinks,” Mr Roban told the media.“In fact each week will have a different theme throughout the 18 weeks of the event.”Attractions will include performances by professional solo musicians and burgeoning youth bands and solo acts, including Gombeys, the Somerset Brigade Band, youth choirs, Vasco Da Gama, Troika and Robert Symons on steel pan drum.Mr Roban said: “This event is the perfect opportunity to enhance the Royal Naval Dockyard experience for our visitors and locals alike.”West End Development Corporation (Wedco) Chairman Walter Lister called for residents from all over the Island to support the event, telling the press conference: “Bring your families and neighbours, it’s going to be different.”Wedco has secured sponsors for the programme which will mean Government does not have to pay out.Mr Roban told the media Municipalities Minister Derrick Burgess has been in talks with the Corporation of St George’s regarding initiatives for the East End.Useful websites: www.thewestend.bm.
