Tourism strategies are paying off, Minister
Bermuda’s marketing strategies are bringing tourists to our shores, according to Tourism Minister Patrice Minors.In a Ministerial statement to the House of Assembly, Mrs Minors said Government’s work with the community, hotel operators, unions, schools and overseas partners was “providing positive results”.Mrs Minors listed a number of advertising activities that are “bearing fruit”, including the Tourism Board’s two-day retreat, the efforts of the Bermuda Hospitality Institute, Bermuda’s winning entry at the Chelsea Flower Show and overseas radio broadcasts.At the end of April tourism leaders got together to discuss the future success of the industry at the Tourism Board’s two-day retreat at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess. Topics discussed included the importance of private and public sector collaboration, effective branding and promotion and the need for the Island’s tourism product to be easily identified.The Tourism Board will consult with the public over the coming weeks and a national tourism plan will be drawn up by the end of October to “revive Bermuda’s tourism product”.Mrs Minors praised the Bermuda Hospitality Institute’s Hospitality Week, aimed at developing a future Bermudian hospitality workforce. A total of 1,780 primary and middle school pupils were involved in lessons focusing on being hospitable, the importance of good manners and taking pride in the Island.BHI’s new board of directors has been chosen and will be headed by Norman Mastalir, managing director of Bermuda’s Fairmont hotels. And 18 high school students have also completed BHI’s ten-week START programme and will take up full-time summer positions in the hospitality industry.Ms Minors said Bermuda was successfully promoted as a honeymoon destination at the Chelsea Flower Show in the UK last week. Bermuda’s debut entry, Bermuda Honeymoon Garden, won a silver medal.Eight radio stations from the UK have also recently carried out live broadcasts to more than 4.5 million listeners from the Fairmont Southampton Resort. They promoted the connection with John Lennon and his visits to the Island Smooth FM UK alone had more than 14,000 entries in its ‘Trip to Bermuda’ giveaway competition.Meanwhile, Minister of Youth, Families, Sports and Community Development Glenn Blakeney gave a Ministerial statement to the House saying Harbour Nights was “bringing cultural enrichment to residents and visitors alike”.Mr Blakeney said the weekly street festival was a public-private collaboration which “brings alive Front Street” with live entertainment. Harbour Nights takes place from 7pm to 10pm every Wednesday until August 31.
