Minister to meet Willowbank trustees
The owners of Willowbank are to hold crunch talks with Tourism Minister Patrice Minors to discuss the fate of the 50-year-old hotel.Fernance Perry, chairman of the trustees, plans to meet the Minister when he returns to the Island next week, as “nothing definite has been decided” about the hotel’s future.Mr Perry announced the hotel’s November 30 closure last week, which will result in 46 full-time and part-time job losses. But Ms Minors has publicly spoken about doing everything she can to keep the hotel open. The Royal Gazette has previously reported that the hotel’s conference centre, which is frequently used by the Government-run Mirrors programme, looks set to stay open to serve the local community.Mr Perry’s secretary told The Royal Gazette via e-mail that the closure was announced “simply because Willowbank has been losing money for a number of years”.She said: “There are no immediate plans for Willowbank. Nothing definite has been decided yet by the board of trustees regarding future plans for Willowbank.“Upon the chairman’s return to the Island on October 10, he and the trustees will make arrangements to meet with the Minister of Tourism.”The 70-room family-run Christian hotel in Sandys, which opened in 1960, looks set to be closed for “an indefinite period”.But there are no plans to sell or lease the property and a small number of staff will continue to be employed to maintain the buildings. No room bookings are to be taken after the end of November and those who have already made advance reservations will receive full refunds.Ms Minors was recently reported as saying that it was unfortunate that some hotels were feeling the downturn of the economy. She said she was hoping for an opportunity to meet with the Willowbank trustees to see if Government could “help to stop them walking away”.
