German cruise line visits Island
Bermuda is set to tap into the world’s fastest-growing cruise ship market, with two more visits from the German cruise line Aida scheduled for this month.Transport Minister Terry Lister announced that the company’s inaugural Bermuda cruise, the Aidaluna, brought 2,085 passengers on September 29.Based in Rostock, Germany, the company is the biggest cruise line catering to the lucrative German-speaking market.Tourism studies have indicated that foreign-language cruise visitors buy more from local merchants and take more excursion tours while ashore than Bermuda’s traditional US visitors cruising. The next Aidaluna cruises are scheduled for October 13 and 27.Mr Lister said his Ministry opened talks with Aida Cruise Line in 2009, as part of a policy to diversify Bermuda’s cruise market.“This led to their deployment in 2011 with three cruises, followed by another three cruises in 2012,” the Minister said.“We are currently in discussions with Aida for additional cruises in 2013.”Courting the German cruise market has included the development of a brochure in German highlighting Bermuda’s attractions. The German-speaking market is tipped to become the world’s second-largest source for cruises, after the US, by the year 2016.
