Bermuda came in for a bit of priceless free publicity as a tourism destination by way of The Bachelorette which aired on the US network ABC on Monday night.Emily Maynard, ‘The Bachelorette’ treated eight men vying to become the ‘apple of her eye’ to a special day on the water at the Bermuda Yacht Club.The show started with the host Chris Harrison informing the eight competitors that they are going to Bermuda; the first stop on an international travel tour.A number of locations around the island were featured throughout the show which made international news headlines on the entertainment circuit yesterday.Alicia Lutes of Hollywood.com wrote: “Emily Maynard and daughter Ricki have made it to the island, and Emily is all atwitter about her future plans to travel back to the island with her future family in tow. How sweet or whatever.”Under the headline ‘The Bachelorette Recap: Bermuda, Bahama, Come on, Pretty Mama’, Ilene Kleinbaum of the internet website HuffPost TV wrote: “The guys pull up to their living quarters on motorised scooters.“Emily and Doug traipse around Bermuda, walk through the arch of love or something of that nature, and smell perfume.“The chosen men are split into two teams and forced to race sailboats, while Emily sits in her own private mini-boat in the middle of the ocean.“The sailboat race concludes with a yellow team victory, which means the red team is sent back to the hotel while the winners get more time with our Bachelorette.”On the CNN Entertainment website, The Marquee Blog said: “The big news was that Emily was taking the 13 remaining contestants to Bermuda ... because nothing prepares you for parenting quite like island hopping for kicks and giggles.“Emily took Doug to the town of St. George for a day of sightseeing and shopping.“We know by now that it doesn’t take much to impress Emily — she’d get excited if Doug said he liked khaki shorts — and she was delighted by the fact that Doug founded a charity.“For the group date, eight contestants slipped into shorts (but maybe not Bermuda shorts) for a four-on-four sailing competition.“The winners got their date with Emily while the losing four had to go back to the hotel and do nothing but talk about ‘The Bachelorette’. (Really, would it hurt to show the guys talk about something else?)“Dinner was served in a cave (yes, a cave), and John and Nate appeared to reject their quinoa entrée. Can one order pizza and breadsticks to a cave?“Next week, Emily and the ten remaining competitors head to London.”The Bermuda episode of the show was filmed in March at various scenes in St George’s, Hamilton Harbour and Crystal Caves. The high profile visit was organised by the Bermuda Department of Tourism.Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert said the show “is one of America’s most-watched prime time programmes and each season is highly anticipated”.“The exposure that Bermuda will receive to tens of millions of North American viewers is tremendous and will highlight why this is truly one of the world’s ultimate romantic destinations.”Other features included a walk along the cobblestone streets of St George’s, the Bermuda Perfumery and Their Majesties Chapel at St Peter’s Church.After enjoying a rum cake and a Gombey troupe performance, the Bachelorette and her date walked through a moongate for luck.The group also sailed on board The Venetian in addition to a “fun and very competitive sailing regatta from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club”.
