Tourism Minister admits mistake over Park Hyatt deal

The Old Club Med site which has yet to be developed into a new Park Hyatt hotel.

In an about-face, the deal for a new hotel in St George’s has been reaffirmed by Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert — after he said he mistakenly called it “terminated”.Meanwhile, United Bermuda Party leader and St George’s West MP Kim Swan continued to press for answers, telling The Royal Gazette: “Government has not been transparent.”Mr Furbert yesterday retracted a remark made on Thursday night’s ZBM news, that the contract with developer Carl Bazarian to develop the former Club Med site had been terminated. In a subsequent statement, the Minister said: “I misspoke.”Mr Furbert added: “What I meant to say is that the time period for the agreement has expired and that the agreement has lapsed. We are fully committed to a hotel in St George’s.“Mr Bazarian and his team are travelling to Bermuda and we will be meeting with him next week.”However, Mr Swan last night said Government had been “derelict in their duty to provide the Bermuda public with an update”.The Park Hyatt Hotel development spelled out in the lease between Government and Addax Holdings would have delivered an economic boost particularly needed in St George’s, he continued.Calling Government “the ultimate custodian of these public lands”, Mr Swan said it was “incumbent on them to act in the best interests of our people”.Mr Swan’s remarks followed on comments made earlier by UBP MP for Southampton West Central, Charlie Swan, who said Government’s silence was causing “grave anxiety and undermining confidence in Bermuda, and internationally, with potential developers”.He also questioned the wording of the original Park Hyatt (St George’s) Act of 2008.Mr Swan said that Act contained no reference to Addax Holding, owned by Mr Bazarian, as holding the lease to the property.
