24,000 fewer cruise visitors expected next year
Bermuda will see 24,000 fewer cruise visitors next year, according to Government forecasts.Meanwhile, the final tally for 2012 is expected to come in at 360,000 — largely due to the loss of the Carnival Cruise Lines visits that propelled 2011 to its historic high of 415,711.A Transport spokesman said next year's expected 336,000 was “still high by historical standards”.Accommodating Carnival meant fitting its ships in at the start or end of the cruise season, known as the 'shoulder' months. For Carnival, cruises to other markets ultimately proved more profitable. As bigger ships crowd out the market, Bermuda finds itself with only 26 cruise vessels able to dock in Hamilton. The preponderance of larger vessels in Dockyard has also squeezed out Holland America's Veendam, which will not be returning next year.“Unless another cruise pier is constructed to handle the larger ships, or a small ship is found that can dock in St George's and Hamilton, the number of cruise visitors moving forward will be in the range of that projected for 2013,” the spokesman for Transport said.“Even though the number of small cruise ships is decreasing, we will continue to pursue finding smaller ships that can safety dock in St George's and Hamilton.”
