Airfield improvements may cause flight delays
Improvements to the airfield at LF Wade International Airport may cause some flight delays, according to the Department of Airport Operations. Most of the improvements will be made at night however “ongoing work required to install the new radar unit will be taking place throughout the day,” a spokesman explained.“After departing from the gate, passengers may experience a delay on the ground prior to take-off as standard, non-radar procedures that call for a greater-than-usual time separation between arriving and departing flights is in effect.“It is hoped that these delays can be minimised so that this time can be made up in-flight to ensure an on-time arrival to one’s destination whenever possible.”The spokesman apologised for any inconvenience.Work on a new radar instillation, intended to extend Bermuda’s radar coverage from 360 miles to 440 miles, is expected to be completed by mid-July. The increased coverage would help the Federal Aviation Administration’s New York-based air traffic controllers manage air traffic in the busy North Atlantic area. And work on the runway, including the instillation of high-visibility, energy-efficient runway lighting and improved signage, will continue throughout the summer. The improvements will allow aircraft to land on the Island when visibility is low, such as in inclement weather conditions. The airport will close between 10pm and 6.30am to facilitate the runway element of the project.Useful website: www.bermudaairport.com.
