Plea to promote Clearwater to tourists
The Clearwater concession’s owner has called for more to be done to help promote “one of the most beautiful parts of the Island”.
Marlon Laws says the Clearwater beaches have been overlooked by visitors for too long due to lack of awareness and unhelpful bus schedules.
The 59-year-old believes the beauty spot still has the potential to be the perfect place for holiday makers to soak up Bermuda’s traditional charms.
Mr Laws has run the Gombeys concession at Clearwater Beach for the past 14 years, with a staff of four.
“We have six beaches down here, a nature reserve, a playground, a restaurant and a bar — this is one of the most beautiful parts of the Island,” Mr Laws said.
“But for a long time now it feels like we have been neglected.
“The bus timetables have not been very helpful and it’s difficult for visitors to make their way down here and spend the day.
“It feels like many of the visitors that arrive in the West End are not being told about what is on offer down here.
“I have had visitors who have come back to us again and again, but we need to do more to get the message out there about what is on offer at Clearwater.” Gombeys restaurant and bar is open seven days a week from 10am until the last visitors leave the beaches.
The concession also rents out umbrellas, chairs and kayaks for tourists looking to explore the coastline.
“When I first started here we had a cruise ship in St George’s and we would see quite a few of those visitors come down to Clearwater,” Mr Laws said.
“But that has changed now and it seems we have been neglected.
“I just want to bring more people back to Clearwater and hope for the best.
“This is a beautiful part of the Island, full of Bermudian charm and heritage, and we need to do more to make people aware of this.
“On top of that, we need to make it easier for our visitors to get to us and then get home.
“I’m not criticising anyone, I just believe we could and we should do more to attract people to Clearwater.”
