Plans for 12-unit hotel submitted for approval

Plans for a proposed new 12-unit hotel on South Shore in Warwick.

Plans to build a new 12-unit hotel overlooking Warwick’s south shore have been submitted to the Department of Planning.

The plans, submitted by the Nautilus Trust last last month, proposed a four-storey hotel to be built to the immediate west of the Azura hotel.

Each of the hotel units in the plan would include two or three bedrooms, along with views of South Shore.

Architectural firm CTX Design Group said in the application that the building was designed with a tiered structure to nestle into the existing cliff face.

The application said: “The proposed tourism related structure naturally complements the existing tourist buildings which neighbour the space and results in an aesthetically pleasing continuation of the tourism development along this section of the south shore.

“Each floor hosts no more than three units to prevent crowding on a daily living scale. Collective site coverage remains well below the maximum limitations.

“The site infrastructure is currently undergoing a major upgrade as part of the neighbouring Azura development ensuring adequate amenity, security, service and faculty support.”

The application said that foreshore protection and conservation management plans have already been submitted, and an existing pathway will offer access to the foreshore.

The document added that the neighbouring site is also used for tourism, and would “only benefit from the addition.”

It said: “By developing the tourism industry, the economy also benefits which will be a pivotal contributor to Bermuda’s economic recovery.

“The proposed is subsidiary in height and appearance to the principal building on the site and is located at a lower elevation, minimising its presence from outside perspective.

“The proposed is intended to further the enjoyment of the property and to provide additional tourism development for the island.”

The application said a large, saltwater pool has been proposed by a separate planning application, which would be used as an amenity for guests.
