SailGP teams adopt sailing clubs
The teams taking part in the Bermuda Sail Grand Prix presented by Hamilton Princess have adopted sailing clubs as part of their community outreach programme.
The eight national teams enrolled in the grand prix have been paired with community sailing clubs before the race commences on Friday in the Great Sound as part of an Adopt-a-Club programme.
The teams will connect virtually with their pair to discuss the creation of youth sailing programmes and hold Q&A sessions with the managers, technicians and athletes.
Each team will also represent their respective clubs with the club’s crest or burgee on their catamaran’s hull.
The clubs will show their support by flying the national flag of their partner team at their clubs and other visible areas across the island.
A spokesman for SailGP said: “SailGP is more than a championship and its supercharged hydrofoiling catamarans – it is a purpose-driven league, leading the way by diversifying the sport of sailing and increasing accessibility.
“Racing for a better future is the rallying cry. And while this is a global aspiration, affecting change begins with each city, each sailing club, each individual.”
SailGP will pair Australia with Spanish Point Boat Club, Denmark with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, Spain with the West End Sailboat Club, France with the St George’s Dinghy & Sports Club, Great Britain with Sandys Boat Club, Japan with the Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club, New Zealand with the Mid-Atlantic Boat & Sports Club and the United States with the East End Mini Yacht Club.
