The island’s tall ship Spirit of Bermuda is to leave Bermuda today on another expedition to fly the flag in overseas ports-of-call.

Spirit is due to set sail from Bermuda to journey to the Canadian Maritime provinces, including Prince Edward Island, Louisbourg and Halifax in Nova Scotia. This voyage will continue down the US Eastern Seaboard to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Boston, and New York, before heading back to Bermuda, arriving home on August 31.

While in Portsmouth, Spirit will participate in the Sail Portsmouth tall ship festival. And in Boston and New York, Spirit will partner with the Bermuda Tourism Authority to host promotional events.

“We are delighted to welcome the Bermuda Sloop to two of our primary target markets on the Eastern seaboard,” said Tracy Berkeley, interim chief executive officer at the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

“As part of our ongoing marketing, we have partnered with Bermuda Sloop to showcase our storied maritime heritage, integrate locals into our international promotional activations, and connect our partners and consumers with memorable Bermuda moments geared to drive conversion where we need it most. “

Past voyages have included trips to the Turks and Caicos Islands, Tall Ships Festivals in different US locations such as Jamestown, Virginia, the Canadian Maritimes, the Azores, and service projects to the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

Robin Hamill, the CEO of the Bermuda Sloop Foundation, said: “This Canadian Maritime voyage is an exciting opportunity to celebrate Bermuda’s maritime heritage, enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and learn skills that will benefit our crew and guests for the rest of their lives.”

“Although the majority of our programmes are developed for Bermuda’s youth, we also know that adults want the opportunity to experience sailing a tall ship, get out of their comfort zones and empower themselves, as well as discover what they’re capable of in a safe atmosphere.

“We are pleased to be able to offer these exciting and educational voyages to adults as well as teenagers. Not only do our youth empowerment programmes transform the lives of Bermuda’s youth, but the experience of sailing on the Spirit will enhance anyone’s life – young and old.”
