A cruise ship custom-built by Celebrity Cruises to call on Bermuda has come to the end of its career.

The former MV Horizon, which has spent the past two years out of service, headed this month to a scrapyard in Turkey, according to Cruise Industry News.

The Horizon was first built for the Celebrity brand and set sail in 1990 to ply the New York-Bermuda route.

She called on St George’s as well as Hamilton in the summers and was designed to navigate Town Cut in the East End.

The ship visited the island in tandem with the Meridian.

In a November 2005 article headlined “End of an Era”, The Royal Gazette reported that the ship had been bought by Island Cruises and would be switched to Mediterranean and Brazil routes.

The final operator to acquire the ship, Pullmantur Cruceros, renamed her Pacific Dream in 2009.

But the ship ended up grounded when global cruise travel was scuppered by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.

The industry magazine reported that the former Horizon set sail for the scrapyard last week.
