The founder of a design firm involved in the redevelopment of the Ariel Sands resort has said that the project aims to offer guests a tranquil retreat with contemporary allure.

In an interview with Surface magazine, Severine Tatangelo, the founder of Studio PCH, discussed the firm’s approach to the hotel, which is expected to be completed next year.

“The exciting prospect of upcoming developments promises to reinvigorate tourism on the island,” Mr Tatangelo said.

“Our design approach was centred around creating a harmonious and serene atmosphere, capturing the essence of the beach while maintaining a refreshing and welcoming ambience.

“We carefully considered the site’s slope and beachfront location, ensuring the design integrated seamlessly with the natural landscape. The design also took into account the orientation to the south sun and the wind, maximising the enjoyment of the stunning ocean vistas.

“Our goal was to offer guests a tranquil, beachy retreat that exuded a sense of calm, celebrating the island’s beauty while ushering in a new era of contemporary allure.”

He told the magazine that the firm had focused on a “natural colour palette” to establish the property’s visual identity.

“The allure and challenges presented by the island of Bermuda served as our inspiration,” Mr Tatangelo said.

“Playing with the contrast of the vibrant blue hues of the ocean and sky against the traditional white treatment of Bermuda’s iconic roofs, we sought to create a captivating design that both resonates with the island’s heritage and captures its breathtaking beauty.”

He added that the project would incorporate Duraslate roofs, saying: “It’s an innovative material that not only advances current science but also preserves the classic Bermuda limewash roof with added aesthetic and antiseptic qualities, flawlessly blending modernity with the island’s rich heritage.

“The project’s most cherished detail lies in the designed louvres, or screens, that enhance the overall character while serving a functional purpose.

“These intricate elements create a harmonious connection between the indoors and outdoors, allowing breathtaking ocean views to be enjoyed from every room.”

Mr Tatangelo said that the inclusion of natural pools on the site was one of the most exciting parts of the project, but he added: “It wasn’t without challenges as recent regulations have limited their construction.”

The Ariel Sands redevelopment project was unveiled as “a joint venture between Michael Douglas, Hollywood actor, and JTRE Holding, founded by Peter Korbăcka”, a European tycoon.

The House of Assembly heard last year that Kempinski Hotels is set to operate the 131-key hotel on the 13.8-acre site, which would include 21 private five-star villas, 33 hotel suites and 30 condo hotel suites, with pools and pickleball courts.

Construction at Aerial Sands is expected to be completed by late 2025, with $12 million to go into the acquisition of land, $108 million projected for construction and total costs expected to come in at $155 million.
