More than a million viewers tuned in globally to the USATF Bermuda Grand Prix, cementing the island’s place as a top travel and sport destination, the Bermuda Tourism Authority said yesterday.

According to the BTA, the event at the Flora Duffy Stadium recorded 1.23 million views on the US television network NBC, an increase of 20 per cent over last year’s numbers, setting the stage for the upcoming summer Olympic season.

The BTA added that the event was “the most-viewed sport on Sunday”, outside US sport events.

The tourism body extolled the late-afternoon broadcast’s promotion of the island’s diverse culture and people.

Tracy Berkeley, the chief executive of the BTA, said: “The USATF Bermuda Grand Prix perfectly aligns with our strategic vision to elevate Bermuda's reputation through world-class sporting events.

“This Grand Prix showcased elite international athletics and solidified Bermuda's position as an example of sports tourism excellence for a destination.”

She added: “As we look ahead, we are optimistic about the opportunities it holds for our island and the continued growth of our sports tourism sector.”

Hazel Clark, a former Olympic medal-winner and director of global business development at the BTA, said: "The USATF Bermuda Grand Prix transcends a mere sporting event; it's a global validation of Bermuda's premier hosting and hospitality capabilities.

“The record-breaking attendance on the island and increased global viewership confirm Bermuda's appeal as a leading destination for major international events, and our business development team plans to capitalise on the success by continuing to deliver and punch above our weight.”

American track star Noah Lyles ignited the mood on Sunday with an easy win in the 100 metres.

The 26-year-old clocked a wind-assisted 9.96 seconds in chilly conditions at the stadium to beat Canadian Aaron Brown and American Pjai Austin.

Local favourite Jah-Nhai Perinchief jumped to second place in the triple jump in his first major meet since last year’s World Championships in Budapest.

The BTA partnered with lead sponsors Athene and Puma American Track League to host the event.
