A new town crier is ringing visitors into St George.

Arthur “Gussie” Godwin did not know what to expect when he applied to be the St George town crier after E. Michael Jones left with a splash in June.

Mr Jones returned as town crier in 2022 after almost 20 years away from the post, succeeding Daniel Frith, who was laid off in 2020.

Mr Godwin explained: “I read the information [the corporation] requested and I guess I was a lucky candidate”.

He feels the post, which he stepped into on July 15, is a natural fit for him, as he has a great relationship with people and businesses in St George and loves interacting with people, especially children.

Mr Godwin, who also runs a tour on the island, thanked the mayor, Quinell Francis, town manager Candy-Lee Foggo and restaurateur Dennie O’Connor, besides Laura Bardgett, Hamilton town crier Ed Christopher and all staff at the Corporation of St George.

He added: “I appreciate the opportunity and I look forward to working hard and keeping the love in St George. Let’s work!”
