Hotel plans new look for beachside amenities

Improved amenities: plans for a water sports centre and bar at Rosewood Tucker’s Point (Image from planning documents)

A Hamilton Parish hotel seeks a revamp for its waterfront with the construction of a new beachside bar and other amenities.

A recent application, submitted by Rosewood Tucker’s Point, proposed tearing down the hotel’s water sports office, reception and snack bar at its beachfront and replacing it with a patron-branded bar and water sports centre.

The application stated: “The current water sports area of Rosewood has an appearance which is not in keeping with the quality resort and the proposal is intended to provide a facelift to the area and improved amenities for the resort and Tucker’s Point Club members.

“The proposal elevates and improves the overall tourism product and brings this area of the property in line with the five-star-classified resort.”

Improvements to the waterfront were previously mentioned by the property owner, Gencom, as part of a $17 million refurbishment project for the hotel.

Planning documents noted that the proposal would not encroach on any setbacks and the only areas of new development would include the creation of wooden terraces and new stairs.

“The redesign and repurposing of the existing buildings allows for a new tourist attraction,” the documents added.

“The niche of a themed bar in Bermuda creates a unique outdoor bar experience in collaboration with a luxury brand, as well as more visibility and better amenities for the local water sports business.”

The document said that the new patron-branded bar would offer “light fare” food and drinks, which would not be cooked in the building.

An existing storage building adjacent to the parking area, which is covered with a sagging pergola and protective golf netting, would remain and get used for bar storage.

“The existing pergola over the parking will be removed and a new structure which supports new golf netting will be installed,” the documents added. “Screening is proposed adjacent to the bar storage building to improve the appearance of this 'service' area.

“A small pergola is proposed to span over the roadway in the area between the bar building and the bar storage and a three-foot-wide area of asphalt will be removed and replaced with concrete pavers from the southern water sports office to the existing restrooms at the northern end of the development area.”

It was announced this year that the Rosewood Tucker’s Point hotel is to undergo a $17 million refurbishment, made possible by a refinancing of the Hamilton Parish property.

A statement from Gencom said: “Gencom’s planned $17 million renovation of Tucker’s Point will include improvements to the 18-hole, par-70 golf course and clubhouse, and beach club, which features Bermuda’s longest stretch of private beach and is home to two pools, a restaurant and a watersports centre, as well as adding new amenities and food and beverage options.”

Karim Alibhai, the head of Gencom, was quoted as saying: “The successful refinancing of the Rosewood Bermuda reaffirms Gencom’s long-term commitment to the country’s economic growth.

“Along with the Fairmont Southampton, Bermuda property, we look forward to elevating the local hospitality and tourism landscape, while opening the doors for other institutional lenders and developers to explore investment opportunities in Bermuda.”
