Sports Illustrated makes welcome return to island
A popular US-based lifestyle magazine returned to Bermuda to shoot photographs for its annual edition, which will feature the island’s landscapes as backdrops.
Sports Illustrated Swimsuit used Bermuda as its star location for an issue in 1995 and came back 30 years later in a partnership with the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
The publication will hit stands in May.
The BTA explained: “Thirty years ago, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit captivated readers with its 1995 swimsuit issue titled ‘Basking in Bermuda’ featuring supermodels, Cheryl Tiegs, Ashley Richardson and Rebecca Romijn photographed by Walter Iooss Jr, and the cover featuring Daniela Pestova photographed by Mike Reinhardt.
“The issue showcased the island’s unmatched natural beauty and stunning landscapes, with South Shore beach featured on the front cover.
“Now, three decades later, the magazine has returned to showcase Bermuda’s vibrant culture, hidden gems and natural wonders to reflect the spirit of adventure, athleticism and style that the publication is celebrated for.”
The upcoming publication will feature the island’s scenery with locations scouted by Cindi Blair Productions and photographs by Ben Watts.
The BTA said: “In a unique collaboration, the Swimsuit Issue worked alongside local Bermudian artists, designers and communities to authentically represent the island’s iconic charm and lively spirit through supporting print and digital editorial content as well as social posts and stories to a following of over 10 million users.”
A representative from Sports Illustrated Swimsuit said the team was "thrilled to be back”.
“Sports Illustrated Swimsuit partnered with Bermuda for one of the main photoshoots for the 2025 issue due to its stunning natural beauty,” the representative said.
“Bermuda's unique blend of lush landscapes, crystal-clear turquoise waters, dramatic cliffs and pristine beaches made for the perfect backdrop.
“It is one of the most picturesque destinations with a vibrant culture to match.”
Eight women will be presented and highlighted in the issue, which will emphasise body positivity and inclusivity, with their images being released incrementally.
Two showcased so far on social media are Lauren Chan, a Canadian entrepreneur, model and television personality, and Jena Sims, an American actress, philanthropist and entrepreneur.
The shoots took place across Bermuda’s beaches, coves, cultural hotspots and luxury properties, with a special focus on Cambridge Beaches Resort & Spa.
Clarence Hofheins, the resort’s general manager, said: "I would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Bermuda Tourism Authority for their ongoing partnership and collaboration and for bringing such exciting opportunities such as Sports Illustrated Swimsuit to our door.
“The organisation's support has been invaluable in helping us showcase the beauty and hospitality of Bermuda on a global scale while increasing exposure for local businesses like ours to international travellers.”
Jamari Douglas, vice-president of marketing, public relations and communications at the BTA, added: “The return of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit to Bermuda underscores the island’s status as a leading destination for luxury travel, fashion photography and world-class experiences and we are beyond excited to welcome the team.
“This milestone partnership not only reinforces Bermuda’s appeal as a top tourism destination but also spotlights its commitment to inclusivity, creativity and natural beauty on a global scale.”
The print issue of the edition will be published in May, while the roll out of the “incredible mix of powerful women” can be found on the publication’s website and Instagram, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit representative said.
