Track and field team warm up for Island Games

Bermuda Track and Field Association president Donna Watson believes the athletes selected to represent Bermuda at the upcoming Island Games will be more than capable of holding their own when they take to the track. An estimated eight athletes will carry the country’s flag on the Isle of Wight, although none of the elite athletes will be able to compete due to international commitments.Watson will be watching today’s Track and Field National Championships at the National Sports Centre with interest as the BTFA prepare to make their final decision on who will make the trip to England. “There will be about eight athletes travelling to the Island Games,” said Watson. “Standards were set and one of the criteria is if the athlete is competing in a track event, it is mandatory that they compete in the National Championships.“The team is pretty much selected, it is just a matter of making sure they meet the last criteria and compete in the National Championships before the names are finalised.“Unfortunately we will not be able to use any of our elite athletes as they are preparing for other international competitions and some will be competing during that time.”Not having Bermuda’s top competitors to call upon this time around will give the BTFA the opportunity to introduce some of the younger up and coming athletes to the international arena as they look to future Games. This may be a task in itself, however, with Watson admitting that commitments may rule a few out due to the timing of the event. It is expected that in two years’ time, with the Games to be hosted on local shores, Bermuda will have a full squad of athletes taking part.“We were hoping to send some of our younger athletes but four of them will be heading to the World Youth Championships at the same time. Some have graduation, are injured or have other commitments.“We are hoping to field a full squad when the event is held in Bermuda in 2013. This time the timing didn’t work out in our favour.”Track and field at the Island Games is scheduled to begin on June 26.n Bermuda athlete Jasmine Brunson finished 15th in the long jump at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines yesterday. The Clemson University athlete recorded a best leap of 6.19 metres.
