Bean adds to national record haul
Taylor-Ashley Bean continued her superb season by setting a new junior women’s national 800 metres record at the Duke Twilight meet in North Carolina at the weekend.The 18-year-old finished in a time of two minutes and 12.72 seconds, eclipsing the previous record (2:13.51) set by her older sister Alexi Bean in 2008.Bean, who scooped a silver and bronze at last month’s Carifta Games, now holds all three national junior middle distance records (800m, 1,500m and 3,000m).The Virginia State University student threatened to shatter the 800m record a fortnight ago at the CIAA Outdoor Championships when she posted a time of 2:13.86 in the semi-finals.She began her assault on the Bermuda middle distance records at the Fred Hardy Invite in Richmond, Virginia, on March 30, breaking the 1,500m record by more than three seconds (4:42.82).The previous 1,500m record (4:45.90) was also set by Alexis Bean in 2009.A week later, Bean, who is coached by Gerry Swan, broke the 3,000m record en route to winning a silver at the Carifta Games in a time of 10:22.82.She also won a bronze in the 1,500m at the Games, which were held at the National Sports Centre.Also competing at the Duke Twilight meet were Bermuda’s Ashley Berry and Lamont Marshall.Berry set a personal best in the 1,500m placing ninth overall in a time of 4:36.80, while Lamont Marshall came fourth overall in the 1,500m with a time of 3:53.56.At the Bob Pollock Invitational in South Carolina at the weekend, Jasmine Brunson finished second in the long jump and third in the triple jump.Sprinter Tre Houston, who is hoping to qualify for this summer’s Olympics, competes at a meet in London tomorrow.
