Injured Breary: ‘I’m so frustrated’

Deon Breary, who is unable to defend her title this year due to injury.

Deon Breary has admitted her frustration at not being able to defend her May 24 Half Marathon Derby title. The 42-year-old, who claimed her first May 24 victory in last year’s race, has only recently recovered from a hip flexor injury and will not be fully fit until the end of next month.“I’ve just recovered from an injury, I’ve only just started back up so I won’t be up to full capacity until the end of June,” said Breary, who finished in time of one hour, 30 minutes and 32 seconds last year.“It’s so frustrating not being able to defend my title.”Breary grabbed the Bermuda Day spotlight 12 months ago by claiming victory the absence of perennial favourite Ashley Estwanik, who was unable to compete as she was pregnant.Estwanik will be back in May 24 action on Thursday and Breary believes the former Nike Farm runner will once again be the female to beat.“I think Ashley will win but you also have Rosana Macshane, who is in tip top shape, and Jennifer Alen,” said Breary, who works for Phoenix Stores.“Ashley’s in a class all by herself and if I had been racing it would have been really tough to beat her.“I’ll be cheering on all the runners in the year’s race, though, including my trainer Sean Trott.”
