What a difference a year made for Rose-Anna Hoey who turned tragedy into triumph on Thursday in the May 24 Half-Marathon.It was only last year that Hoey was running past Newstead where she collapsed from exhaustion and questioned whether she would continue to compete in the sport.Fast forward a year, and the 30-year-old not only achieved her main objective, to finish, but beat everyone in the female field apart from winner Ashley Estwanik. As a relative newcomer to the sport she only took up road running three years’ ago she finished in a time of one hour, 29 minutes, 16 seconds, 44 seconds ahead of her goal, to take second place.“The race was fantastic, obviously the conditions made it very humid on the day and at times was very difficult but you had a sense that it would be like that as it was almost the same last year and you had to prepare for it,” said Hoey yesterday.“I had an overall goal in my head of a time and I stuck to that time of one hour, 30 minutes. It was very pleasing.“Unfortunately last year I had a very bad experience in that just past Newstead I collapsed. So this year was all about finishing and to come second is great as well.”Hoey said she never thought about trying to catch Estwanik, but she believes there is more to come in the future. Currently she trains with 2011 May 24 champion Deon Breary, who was unable to compete this year because of injury. The experience second time around was much better than the first for Hoey and the Irish native admitted the roadside support had helped her.‘It is wonderful experience, it’s great to see the people of Bermuda line up on every street and there were cheers all along the route and it really kept me going.“I did come second but it was never in my head to try and catch Ashley. I did a good half-marathon about ten weeks ago in New York. I believe it was one hour, 27 minutes, so I just wanted go under my original goal.“My overall placing wasn’t the main the issue on the day, the main goal was my time and I was happy that I completed that goal.“I started running less than three years ago so I have a few more races in my body and I’m hoping to see a little bit of improvement.”
