Triathetes make their mark in Miami
Three local residents had top ten finishes in their age groups at the Ironman 70.3 Miami triathlon last weekend.Martina Olcheski-Bell placed sixth in the women’s 25-29 division and 556th overall in a time of 5 hours, 16 minutes and 23 seconds, three places ahead of Emma O’Connell who was 690th overall in 5:24.42.Christine Patton was also impressive in her age group, 50-54, clocking six hours even to finish ninth and 1287th overall.Daniel DeGiorgio, in the men’s 40-44 age group, was 39th in his division and 293rd overall in 4:57.26 while Timothy Goodyer was 45th among the 35-39 competitors and 221st overall after breaking the five hour barrier with his time of 4:52.17. That was the best of all Bermuda competitors.A total of 15 triathletes from Bermuda competed in the gruelling event which saw Terenzo Bozzone of New Zealand (3:42.17) and Leanda Cave of Great Britain (4:08.48) win the respective men’s and women’s pro divisions.There were some 2778 finishers in the event.Also representing the Island were: Adam Hopkin (317th overall), Dennis Fagundo (440th), John Thompson (462nd), Geoff Smith (540th), Jonathan Betts (614th), Kevin Tucker (702nd), Gordon Benson (964th), Michael Harvey (974th), Stuart Clare (1513th) and Alan Gilbertson (1882th).
