Watson hoping for greater medal haul

Bermuda National Athletics Association (BNAA) president Donna Watson is quietly confident the Island can capture more medals at the upcoming Carifta Games than they managed 12 months ago.Bermuda’s squad of 23 athletes leave for the Bahamas tomorrow where they will hope to improve on the six medals they won at last year’s spectacle held on home soil.Buoyed by the return of three of last year’s medallists Justin Donawa, Juma Mouchette and Junior Athlete of the Year Kyrah Scraders, Watson believes Bermuda can build on last year’s successful Games.Under-17 triple gold medallist Donawa will compete in the Under-20 category along with Kyrah Scraders, who won silver in the Under-17 1,500 metres 12 months ago. Mouchette, who won bronze in the 5,000 metres last year, will perform in the 1,500 and 5,000 metres.“I’m happy with the team and I’m expecting great things from them,” said Watson.“We hope to get more than the six medals we won last year and the athletes are capable of that.“Of course we have Justin (Donawa) who won the gold last year but he’s moving into the Under-20 division along with Kyrah Scraders. Sakari Famous who will be competing for the first time and is performing very well in the high jump.“Jeneko Place is one hundred percent fit this year and ready to roll, while Tiara Derosa who continues to improve every time she throws.“Then there are Daniel Oatley, Dage Minors, and Juma Mouchette who we also have high hopes of performing well.“Jahnai Perinchief is in his first year in high jump; we have Bruce DeGrilla in the long jump, Kerri Furbert and several of other athletes who I feel will have great performances.”A key factor for Watson’s optimism is the pressure, or lack there of, surrounding the team compared to last year’s competition on local shores.A charter plane carrying roughly 150 spectators will cheer on the squad.“I think there will be less pressure on the athletes as Carifta is not being held in Bermuda this time and they don't have the pressure from the crowd even though there are over 150 spectators travelling to the games.“I can't say that we have assured medals but I think there are going to be some surprises and we should have more than six.”Bermuda’s Carifta Games squadQualified AthletesUnder-17 Women: Tiara Derosa (shot put, discus), Kyrah Scraders (800m, 1,500m), Quasshie Douglas (800m, 1,500m), Sakari Famous (High Jump)Under-20 Women: Kerri Furbert (long jump)Under-17 Men: Michaiah Robinson (400m, 800m); Ethan Philip (long jump); Antonio Bailey (400m)Under-20 Men: Bruce DeGrilla (long jump); Justin Donawa (triple jump); Chas Smith (high jump), Jeneko Place (100m, 200m), Juma Mouchette (1,500m, 5,000m), Dage Minors (800m, 1,500m), Quinn Simmons (discus)Unqualified AthletesUnder-17 Women: Zakiyyah Showers (5,000m)Under-20 Women: Tahirah Butterfield (100m, 200m), Rachel Fox (400m, 800m)Under-17 Men: Kionje Somner (100m, 200m), Daniel Oatley (3,000m), Jahnai Perinchief (High Jump)Under-20 Men: Naquan Smith (Javelin), Nate Hartwig (5,000m)Management team: Lloyd VanPutten (male team manager), Mia Black (female team manager), Troy Douglas (head coach), Sonya Smith (throwing coach), Jarita Vickers (middle distance coach), Brian Wellman (jumps coach), Shirlene Dill (physio)
