King and Smith set for World Champs
Olympian long jumpers Arantxa King and Tyrone Smith will represent Bermuda at the IAAF World Championships in Moscow from August 10 to 18.Both Smith and King will be aiming to make the finals with Smith a medal hopeful after an outstanding season so far. Travelling with the team will be manager Michele Williams, vice-president of the Bermuda National Athletic Association, and national coach Troy Douglas.Also making the trip to Moscow will be BNAA President Donna Watson and general secretary Freddie Evans who will be attending the IAA World Congress which is held at all World Championships. Some new rules may be added or changed when they are voted on at the Congress.“Also as you all are aware we lost our president of NACAC, Mr Teddy McCook, earlier this year so we also have an election for the new president,” said Watson.The BNAA is looking to continue on the great success at the NatWest Island Games where athletes finished the event with a haul of 26 medals.“So far we have had a tremendous summer with Justin Donawa making the finals in the triple jump at the World Youth Championships and placing seventh overall with a huge PB of 15.65 metres,” added Watson.“Then we had Kyrah Scraders making it to the semi-finals at the World Youth Championships in the 800 metres with a huge PB of 2.08.91, and then again in the semi-finals running a time of 2:09.30. Shaquille Dill made it to the finals at the Universiade Games in the 800 metres, running a PB of 1:47.76.”At the CAC Senior Championships, King had a silver in the long jump with her best jump of the season of 6.45 metres and Shianne Smith, the most successful track athlete at NatWest Island Games, landing a silver in the Heptathlon with a new Bermuda record of 52222 points and a new Bermuda record in the 100m Hurdles with a time of 14.27 seconds.
