Warm welcome for Kyrah the great
Bermuda’s Carifta Games team returned home last night with double medal-winner Kyrah Scraders the toast of the celebrations just like she was a year ago.
Scraders again came back with a gold in the 800 metres and silver in the 1500 metres in what was her last year competing in the under-18 age group.
“I’m on track for the World Juniors that are going to be held in Oregon in July,” Scraders said. “I’m only one second off. I need to run 2:09 and I ran 2:10.”
Scraders was beaten to the gold medal by Cassie George, of Guyana, in the 1,500 metres, but ran a brilliant race to take the gold in the 800.
“Cassie is a really good long-distance runner,” Scraders said. “She ran the 1,500 and 3,000 metres this year, but I like the 800 because I have more speed.”
Bermuda again came back with five medals, with Jahnai Perinchief and Sakari Famous winning silver in the high jump and Dage Minors the bronze in the 1,500 metres in his last Carifta Games.
Scraders and Perinchief both reached the qualifying standard for the Youth Olympics in Nanjing, China, in August.
