Saltus Grammar School and CedarBridge Academy share the lead after the first day of the Bermuda School Sports Federation Senior School Championships.

Both teams top the table with 157.50 points. Berkeley Institute follow close behind on 147.50. All three teams will be vying for the title tomorrow evening when all of the track finals will be held.

Saltus claimed three of the four 3,000-metre titles. Jessie Marshall and Nick Narraway won the under-16 girls’ and boys’ races respectively, while Carifta qualifiers Ashley Irby and Berkeley’s Robert Edwards topped the podium in the over-16 division.

Berkeley’s high jump sensation Sakari Famous proved she is not a one-trick pony after winning the over-16 girls’ javelin and long jump events, while middle-distance runner Messiah Greaves claimed the triple jump title for Bermuda High School.

Asrael Basden, from CedarBridge Academy, was victorious in the under-16 javelin and finished third in the shot put behind school mate Jah-Qala Tucker, who won with a throw of 10.42 metres. Gabriella Medeiros finished first in the high jump for Bermuda High School.

Berkeley’s Samuel Darrell won the under-16 boys’ high jump with a leap of 1.80m and finished second in the triple jump behind school-mate Jaden King. Andre Woollery won the javelin for CedarBridge. Cameron Coffey was the top performer in the over-16 boys division, winning the javelin with an impressive 44.44m and finishing second in the shot put behind CedarBridge’s Jahnia Trott. Omar Wilson from CedarBridge claimed the long-jump title after leaping 6.65m.

Meanwhile, Dellwood Middle School set themselves up to retain their crown on the first day of the BSSF Middle School Championships on Wednesday.

The reigning champions opened up an impressive 100-point lead over closest rivals Sandys Secondary Middle School.

Dellwood led the way winning eight field events. They were led by the Bell twins in the under-13 category. Kesay Bell was victorious in the shot put and turbo javelin event while sister Kisaye claimed silver in the shot put and bronze in the turbo javelin.

Eleanor Richmond was also a double winner. The Warwick Academy student claimed top honours in the over-13 discus and turbo javelin events.

There are many points to be won next Tuesday when all of the track finals will be held along with the remaining field events.

Two records fell today by TN Tatem Middle School athletes. Sancho Smith was the first to register a new record when he leapt 1.76 metres in the over-13 boys high jump, eclipsing the mark of 1.75 set by Kyle Outerbridge from Dellwood Middle School in 2000.

Smith looks set to win champion boy as he blazed his way as top qualifier in the 400 and 800 races. The Tatem over-13 girls relay team also broke a record when the crossed the line in 52.63 seconds. Next Tuesday promises to be an exciting day of athletics as many record flirting performances gave a glimpse into what we may see next week.
