Sakari Famous soared to new heights to extend her impressive medal streak on the final day of the Carifta Games in Bahamas yesterday.

The Bermuda high jumper captured the bronze after clearing the bar at 1.79 metres on her second attempt at the Thomas A Robinson National Stadium in Nassau and has now won a medal in all six of her appearances at the Games.

“It’s another very exciting moment to come again to the Carifta Games and get a bronze with all the support from my coach, family, friends and team-mates,” the Junior Female Athlete of the Year told The Royal Gazette. “It’s definitely great.

“[The streak] was on my mind since I got here in Bahamas. It was scary going into competition but I came out with bronze and I am just happy.”

Famous’s display is her best for the season as well as a new best at the Games and was a centimetre shy of her national junior record of 180 metres, which remains her overall best.

“I was hoping for that 1.81 and almost got it, but my legs were a bit tired,” Famous added.

“But I was blown away when I got 1.79 because 1.79 so early for me is pretty cool. Who knows what can happen in the future if I’m jumping 1.79 right now?”

Rohaan Simons, the national jumping coach, was overjoyed to see the promising athlete once again thrive on the international stage.

“Sakari displayed, once again, why she is one of the best youth high jumpers in the world,” Simons said. “She battled like a warrior with everything pretty much going against her; lack of training due to weather and little injuries and illness.

“We really didn’t have the rhythm training that we needed and wanted. But she didn’t let that hold her back at all. She jumped ferociously.

“She pulled off a magnificent jump at 179 and displayed emotions that I hadn’t seen in a very long time.

“She is extremely excited and proud of herself for battling that hard a jumping a season’s best under the conditions.”

Famous earned Bermuda its only medal at this year’s Carifta Games hosted by Bahamas for the eighth time.

Amelia Othman narrowly missed out on bronze after finishing tied for fourth with a personal best height of 1.60 metres in the under-17 girls high jump.

Also going close to a medal was Ashley Irby who placed fourth in the under-20 girls 1,500 metres.

Bermuda was represented by a 14-strong team led by girls’ and boys’ captains Famous and Elisha Darrell.
