Twenty athletes representing Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) USA will arrive in Bermuda today to compete in the National Track and Field Championships.

The event, which will take place on Friday from 5.30pm to 7pm and on Saturday from 11am to 3pm, will also feature members of the Carifta Games team, which won six medals in the Cayman Islands in April.

The team won three gold medals through Caitlyn Bobb, Nirobi Smith-Mills and Isabelle Dutranoit, while Nathan Armstrong picked up a silver and a bronze. The women’s 4x100 metres relay team of Bobb, Keturah Bulford-Trott, Sanaa Rae Morris and Za’Kayza Parsons won bronze.

Neither Bobb, Dutranoit or Armstrong will be back for the championships while college pair Shaquille Dill and Sakari Famous will also be missing. Dill is injured while high jumper Famous is competing for the University of Georgia at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Texas this weekend.

Middle-distance runner Trey Simons has returned from school, but it is not certain whether he will be competing.

Donna Raynor, the Bermuda National Athletics Association president, is excited to have a visiting team compete at the championships as Bermuda begins its preparation to host the Carifta Games next year.

“With the overseas athletes, if there are any records broken they will be allcomers records and not national records,” Raynor said.

“We are looking forward to good competition.

“We are excited about our championships as we have not had overseas guests at our championships for a number of years.

“This is all moving towards our athletes’ preparation for the Carifta Games being held in Bermuda.

“We are also preparing for athletes to compete in the NACAC age group competition, 11-12 male and female and 13-14 male and female.

“It is a multi-event competition, therefore we will have them competing in events like hurdles, baseball throw, sprints and distance events over the two-day period with the results going towards assisting with our selection of the team.”
