Jah-Nhai Perinchief made a promising start to the outdoor season competing in the men’s triple jump at the 2023 Wanda Doha Diamond League in Qatar on Friday.

The Bermudian placed sixth among a field of 11 athletes at the Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium.

Perinchief peaked with a wind-assisted and season’s best leap of 16.86 metres on his second attempt.

Portugal’s Pedro Pichardo won the gold medal with a leap of 17.91 metres, which was also on his second attempt.

Silver went to Burkina Faso’s Zango Hugues Fabrice with a best of 17.81, with bronze going to Cuba’s Andy Diaz Hernandez with a jump of 17.80 metres.

The latest performance follows on from a strong indoor campaign in which Perinchief made the perfect start to the season after winning February’s Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, with a leap of 16.75 metres.

He then enjoyed another proud moment a month later after winning the prestigious Male Athlete of the Year award during the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation’s annual sports awards ceremony at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.

Perinchief had the honour bestowed upon him after becoming the first Bermudian to win an athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games since 1994 when he won a bronze medal in the triple jump in Birmingham in July and finished runner-up at the North American, Central American and Caribbean Athletic Association Senior Championships in August.
