Fifty American athletes take on Bermuda’s best in National Championships
Two days of fantastic athletics action is in store as 50 visiting American high school athletes take on some of Bermuda’s best in the Aecon Bermuda National Championships at the Flora Duffy Stadium.
The event gets under way at 6pm tonight and continues at 10am on Saturday with Caitlyn Bobb, a member of the island’s team for the Central American and Caribbean Games, the most high-profile local athlete participating before she heads off to El Salvador.
Kahzi Sealy, Sanna Rae Morris and Keturah Bulford-Trott are the other local stars taking part in a competition that incorporates the Bermuda Challenge.
Some of Bermuda’s future stars including Kelise Wade, Sukanya Jobson, Jasmine Reid-Rubaine, Jemani Scott and Jace Postlewaithe are also competing alongside other members of Bermuda’s 2023 Carifta Games squad.
Bermuda discus thrower Tiara DeRosa is also in action on the first night as she faces competition from international throwers including Jamaican duo Shadae Lawrence and Adriene Adams and Calea Jackson of the Bahamas.
Working with the Bermuda Tourism Authority, the Bermuda National Athletics Association extended an invitation to coach Jason Jackson of Speed4 Sport to bring athletes over from the US with more than 220 individual entries recorded as of Thursday afternoon.
“Bermuda National Athletic Association are excited to host the Aecon Bermuda National Championship,’’ said BNAA president Freddie Evans.
“In a spirit of competition, camaraderie, and culture, BNAA has invited coach Jason Jackson of Speed4 Sport, to bring some of the USA’s high school stars, and superstars to be part of this event, which we have subtitled the Bermuda Challenge.”
Evans highlighted the part played by the BTA in providing avenues for the growth of sport on the island.
“The Bermuda Tourism Authority continues to support the expansion of sport opportunities and they played a key role in making the competition possible,’’ he said.
“BNAA are indebted to Aecon for their support of local track and field. BNAA also appreciate the support of the volunteers who are giving their time to make this event a reality. It will be an exciting event.”
Participation of the US athletes came after Hazel Clark, the BTA's director of global business development and partnerships, brought organisers from Speed 4 Sport to the island for last year’s USATF Bermuda Grand Prix.
“They were impressed with our delivery of the Bermuda Games and have decided to partner with the BTA and Bermuda National Athletics Association on a top-level junior track and field event,’’ Clark said.
This year’s National Championships will be streamed live by US service FloSports.
