‘Waking up and seeing the medal next to my bed, I was just over the moon’
Dage Minors hailed the highlight of his career after winning a bronze medal in the 1,500 metres at the Central American and Caribbean Games in El Salvador.
In an astute performance, Minors bided his time among the chasing pack, before digging deep on the final lap to sprint clear of Timothy Doyle, of Puerto Rico, and seal third place behind race winner Fernando Martinez, of Mexico and Doyle’s compatriot Robert Napolitano.
Reflecting on the morning after his triumph, Minors concedes he is only just coming to the realisation of the magnitude of the achievement.
“It’s only really finally starting to set in,” said the 27-year-old. “I didn’t get a whole lot of sleep, because everything was a little crazy, but waking up and seeing the medal next to my bed; I was just over the moon.
“I’m normally a bit of a laid back person but in terms of my career this is definitely the highest level I’ve ever won at, I’m really delighted.”
Minors, who endured less than ideal preparation going into the event, having overcome a niggling knee injury, revealed the race played out exactly as he had anticipated.
“The race went exactly how we thought it would with someone going off strongly and then settling in with the better guys towards the front, that’s exactly what my coach predicted would happen,” he added.
"I just wanted to stay in those fourth and fifth positions and then try to have one last big push at the end and that’s how it played out.
“There was a little bit of annoyance from myself afterwards that having been injured I had lost a little bit of fitness and couldn’t find that next gear to go with the top two.
“However, I’m not going to dwell on that too much because it is what it is and I’m over the moon to have won a bronze medal.”
Minor’s success took Bermuda’s medal haul to six, double the number the team garnered in Colombia in 2018.
“I’m very proud to have been able to be a part of this Bermuda team,” he said. “It’s a great group and being able to watch Caitlin [Conyers] and Conor [White] win their bronze medals in the cycling was really great.
“Being in this kind of environment has been amazing and really memorable.”
