‘It’s been an amazing start to the season’
Sakari Famous is confident of getting back to her best after continuing her return from injury in winning fashion.
After being sidelined through a stress fracture to her back, which prevented her from competing at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in October, the Bermuda high-jumper has started the new year with a bang, clinching successive collegiate meet victories.
Building on her triumph at the LSU Purple Tiger meet in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in which she cleared 1.80 metres, Famous, who competes for McNeese University, made it back-to-back successes with victory at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, with a winning height of 1.76m.
While she is still a little way short of reaching the same heights of her best of 1.84m, Famous is adamant that her performances will improve as her confidence continues to grow.
“I fell like I am fully recovered from my back injury,” she said. “I’ve been feeling really good about my recovery process and so now it is just about maintaining any inflammation that may occur.
“Last year I rested as much as I could and worked really hard to build my strength back so that I can last through the season.
“It did take a while to build back confidence but seeing my progression over fall training led me to have more confidence than I’ve ever had before. Sometimes there can be some worry but I try to quickly remove that doubt.
“For me it usually takes some time to build up to higher heights. However, it’s been an amazing start to the season and I believe it can lead to a great rest of the campaign.”
As a host of her compatriots are turning their attention to attempting to earn qualification to the Olympic Games in Paris this summer, Famous concedes she is focusing solely on her domestic campaign while still harbouring ambitions of representing the country on the international stage again.
“Right now I’m focusing on competing for my university,” she added. “I have both indoor and outdoor campaigns and I’m looking forward to trying to achieving my collegiate goals.
“For the rest of year I’m looking forward to having any opportunities to compete at senior meets.
“Obviously, I also love competing for my country and experiencing the track and field world internationally, so doing that again is another hope of mine.”
