Sakari Famous breaks national indoor high jump record

Flying high: Sakari Famous broke her national indoor record in the high jump at the McNeese State Indoor Meet in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Sakari Famous continued her impressive return from injury after breaking her national indoor record in the high jump at the McNeese State Indoor Meet in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

The Bermudian successfully cleared 1.81 metres, surpassing her previous best indoor effort of 1.80, with the mark also a new school record.

It was Famous’s third successive victory since returning from a stress fracture to her back after triumphing in the LSU Purple Tiger in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the Samford Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama, this month.

Meanwhile, compatriot Jah-Nhai Perinchief got his indoor season under way when finishing second in the triple jump at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Saturday.

The 26-year-old posted a best jump of 16.51 to finish runner-up to Brandon Green, of the United States, who clinched victory with a jump of 16.62.

The meet was Perinchief’s first competitive action since the end of August after he opted to withdraw from the Bermuda squad for the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile, in October in favour of continuing to focus on recovering fully from a long-term hamstring injury.
