Young athletes qualify for Carifta Games
Three Bermudian athletes have successfully hit the qualification mark for the Carifta Games at the latest Bermuda National Athletics Association track meet.
Chief among them was Jake Brislane, who punched his ticket for the Games in Grenada in March, when competing in the men’s under-20 5,000 metres at the Flora Duffy Stadium at the weekend.
The 19-year-old crossed the line in a winning time of 16min 13.67sec, comfortably inside the required mark of 16:40.
Also heading to Grenada is Cameron Adkins, who clinched victory in the under-17 3,000 metres in a time of 9:48.16, nearly ten seconds inside the Carifta standard of 9:58.
There was also joy for Jaeda Grant, who booked her place in the under-17 1,500 metres. The 16-year-old triumphed in 4:57.72, nearly 20 seconds inside the required time of 5:06.
While there were no other athletes to qualify for Carifta, there were a number of impressive performances.
Charles Fox came agonisingly close to qualifying in the under-17 200 metres, crossing the line in a time of 25.68sec, just two-tenths of a second off the required time of 22.50.
There was also an encouraging effort from Kyah Richardson in the 100 metres for under-17s. He won the race in 11.84sec, slightly more than six-tenths off the Carifta standard of 11.20.
The day also included some dominant displays, particularly from Lashee Jones, who was victorious in the under-17 sprints.
Jones clocked a winning time of 12.94 in the 100 metres, more than a second clear of runner-up Sarai Minors (14.07). She then followed that up with victory in the 200 in a time of 26.41, ahead of Kalia Daley in 27.19, with Zyari Lawrence rounding out the top three in 28.17.
