Technical issues leave Jessica Lewis disappointed in Dubai
Jessica Lewis was left disappointed after technical issues hampered her performance in the International Open Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai on Monday.
Lewis crossed the line in fourth in the women’s T52/53 100 metres with her finishing time of 17.74 seconds just over two seconds behind the winner Catherine Debrunner of Switzerland, with Briton Samantha Kinghorn second and Hamide Dogangun, from Turkey, finishing third.
To put the Bermudian athlete’s finishing time into context, she won her third ParaPan American gold medal in Chile last year in a time of 16.71sec and Lewis was disappointed with her latest effort, which was hampered by technical issues.
“The race didn’t go too well,” Lewis said.
“We had done a chair alignment yesterday so my steering wasn’t set up straight. We were supposed to get a lap so I could check it before the race but didn’t get one, so I was fighting my chair to stay straight in the race.
I was happy with my first few strokes at the start though as we have been working on putting in a longer impulse.
Lewis will be competing again in the 400 metres on Wednesday and is hopeful that her mood will improve as she anticipates a better race.
“I’m frustrated as I was feeling good going into the race. It’s just tough when it’s a mechanical problem, but I’m now refocusing now on the 400 metres tomorrow.”
